The future is probably federated

A new kind of social internet is currently forming. Right now it might still look like ‘Twitter and Reddit, only different,’ but that’s only the very beginning of what’s to come. Hopefully.

Good read from David Pierce on the future of social media.

There seems to be two schools of thought for the post Twitter era:

  1. The Gruber centric view - that twitter can be recreated given the correct platform and that Threads is likely to be that platform.
    1. The ActivityPub centric view - that there should be a plethora of platforms focused on doing one thing well that can interconnect.

I'm not at all convinced Twitter should or could be recreated - that time in the world has been and gone.

My experience of Threads is that it is a phantasm of the worst of LinkedIn's fauxluencer culture and Twitters rage based algorithm - which seems to be the end state for any centralised social network.
